This museum's collections offer a sweeping panorama of French and European art from 1848 to 1914. Orsay boasts the world's largest assemblage of impressionist paintings. It also has admirable sculpture (magnificently presented in the monumental gallery), furniture and art objects of exceptional quality.

Long a derelict railway station, Orsay was restructured as a museum in 1986 to house and showcase various artistic movements: academicism, realism, impressionism, symbolism, and Art Nouveau. It is home to famous 19th-century masterpieces like Millet's Angélus, Ingres' La Source, Manet's Olympia, Monet's series of Cathédrales de Rouen, Cabanel's Birth of Venus, and Renoir's Bal du Moulin de la Galette.
